According to William Shakespeare something's were rotten in the State of Denmark. But was it really? And did he exist - Hamlet, Prince of Denmark? We don't know that for sure. But we know something else about the Kingdom of Denmark The Kingdom of Denmark is known to be the oldest in the world. And the oldest registered members of The Danish Royal House is Gorm the Old (d about 958) married to Thyra Danebod followed by a number of famous Viking Kings. Their son Harald I Bluetooth (d approx 987) won the whole Denmark and all Norway. He also turned the Danes to Christianity. Later followed other great kings such as Canute the Great, who conquered England and parts of Sweden. Among other interesting Royal Danes the Waldemars are noticed - such as Valdemar the Great (1157-1182), Valdemar the Victorious (1182-1202) and Valdemar Atterdag, who raised Denmark after a long period of interregnum (1340). His daughter, Margrethe I, became a famous ruler of Scandinavia. During the Renaisance started the King-chain of Christians and Frederics that are known up to the current sovereign, Queen Margrethe II. |
